Cross-post from Deb Keiser Writes Again
I had so much fun at a 'Bachata' social last month at Vitti's Dance Studio. Debra Keiser wrote about the studio in West Danbury near the mall. It reminds me of a modern-day speakeasy or spacious dance club in Manhattan. The best part is it's right in the heart of Fairfield County and you can drop in for a fraction of the price. Check out the article and sign up for a class, drop in, or go to a social - friends: LMK if you decide to check it out, I'll join you! -

First, hair update. It’s a work in progress, and it’s looking healthy and happy again: “Dancing hair,” according to my friend Donna. My upcoming appointment is in December, and I plan to snap a pix of it then to share with you. But so far, the JCPenney salon still gets a thumbs up.

My feet are also dancing again! After a long Covid layoff and medical particulars that slowed me down (some I’ve shared here), I’m back at Vitti’s Dance Studio, which seems to be something of a “hidden gem,” and even though I, too, have tired of that phrase, it does seem to suit.

The studio, at 10 Precision Road, just off Kenosia Avenue in Danbury, has been in business since 1975, but it’s not familiar to many people I mention it to. It does, however, have a large and loyal following. Today I’m sharing it with you, because if you want to learn how to dance, or just have a night out, this is the place.

A group dance lesson

For example, on my first night of West Coast Swing, a couple turned up, the guy having arranged the lesson as a surprise for his date before dinner. She was a good sport, throwing herself into it, and by the looks of it, they had a great time.

After a month of West Coast Swing, I’ve switched back to Ballroom and Latin, for the moment, anyway. At Vitti’s, you can try different types.

The studio offers group lessons in Ballroom and Latin dancing, and other styles, too, and there’s no pressure. Everyone is welcoming and quick with a smile. Group lessons are 45 minutes long, and when doing Ballroom and Latin, it’s typical to work on one dance for three to four weeks. This month it’s been the waltz. If you make a mistake (or two or three), partners are patient. It’s okay.

You can also take private lessons or work out your wedding dance here.

The studio is beautiful and large with three dance spaces, measuring 70 feet by 30 feet, 40 feet by 50 feet and 28 feet by 23 feet. The atmosphere is relaxed. AND it will NOT drain your bank account like the well-known chain you probably do know about. You will not be asked to sign a contract. Classes are $15-$20 to drop in, with monthly discounts sometimes offered.

From the website:

At Vitti’s Dance Studio we believe in helping you learn to dance for fun, exercise, or your first wedding dance. Whether you want to Salsa the night away at a club, Hustle at your cousin’s wedding, or just learn to dance socially, we want you to feel comfortable and confident in your dance abilities. From group classes to private lessons, you are sure to find an option that is right for you. We are devoted to making your experience with us fun and relaxed.

Group classes are held evenings Monday through Friday. An example of the current schedule follows; check the website for details and more information (hours may change).

  • Monday: Salsa, Beginner at 6 p.m.; Advanced Beginner at 7 p.m.; Hustle, Beginner at 8.

  • Tuesday: LaBlast (a workout format using dance steps) at 6 p.m.; Hustle, Advanced Beginner at 7 p.m.; Ballroom and Latin, Beginner II at 8.

  • Wednesday: Belly Dance, Beginner at 4:45 p.m.; Ballroom and Latin, Advanced Beginner at 7.

  • Thursday: LaBlast at 6 p.m.; Ballroom and Latin, Intermediate at 7; Hustle, Intermediate at 8.

  • Friday: Bachata (very popular Latin dance), Advanced Beginner 6 p.m. and Beginner 7 p.m.; Samba, Beginner at 7.

Classes in West Coast Swing and Hawaiian Dance are also offered periodically.

LaBlast (created by Louis van Amstel of “Dancing with the Stars”) is exactly what it sounds like: A fabulous partner-free dance workout that’s a blast! I have tried it, and it’s becoming addictive. Not only is it a good workout, but it helps reinforce dance steps you learn in regular classes.

Vitti’s also schedules “Socials” at least once a month, which are an opportunity to practice your new steps with other dancers. They generally open with a half-hour dance lesson at 6:30 p.m. and then, from 7 till 10 p.m., it’s just dance the night away! I’ve been to two recently and really had fun. I left smiling, with a tune in my head. Many outstanding dancers turn up, some even coming from NYC. There’s a break where coffee/tea and cake is served; all this for $23.

Dressed up and dancing at a social

The studio is owned by Deb Linley, who danced under the tutelage of John Vitti and other world-class dancers, and in many American and International dance competitions. She teaches a lot of classes and is excellent at breaking down the dance and showing you how to do it.

A little about the studio history from the website:

One of the largest and oldest dance studios in the country, Vitti’s Dance Studio was originally established in 1975 by original founder and owner John Vitti.  John, who was a member of National Dance Council of America (NDCA), and certified by the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) passed away in the Spring of 2021.  Deb Linley, the new owner as of 2023, has been managing the studio since summer of 2017 and is happy to be keeping John’s memory and legacy alive!
